IPL and Lalit Modi's AXE Effect

I'm back. Back to blogging ways. And join me in saying the tagline of Degeneration X to second PU... Thank you.

All the hullabaloo about the IPL was very amusing to watch. Now that the public has got front seats in the mud sling fest between Modi and Tharoor and others, the entertainment quotient of the IPL as a whole has just been upped a little.
So what is the IPL? Can some alleged problems in administration mean anything to the people watching the game? The media is very capricious. It takes them no time to make or unmake anything.

The IPL went from being the "Latest Indian Export", "The new Identity of Indian Cricket" to "The Indian Proxy League", "The Great Indian joke" and other such names. All quotes mentioned above are ones i read in the newspapers. All this the result of some tweets.

IPL is all about the cricket. IPL is about worshiping the Gods of cricket. What goes on off the field should not and thankfully did not diminish the on field exploits of the players. Who cares who got the media rights when you have Dhoni hitting everything out of the park. Who cares about who got sweat equity in the Kochi franchise when you're shouting yourself hoarse cheering your team on. Who cares what Lalit Modi did in his college days when the whole family is glued to the television and the room has a tense atmosphere during the last over in a match.

I cant understand why the media suddenly thinks that the IPL is 90% hype and 10% sport. There will a glam quotient involved, especialy when you're dabbling with hundreds of crores or rupees. A sum which cant even be imagined by the likes of us. Whatever Lalit Modi might or might not have done, he has succeeded in building the most lucrative business empire, the IPL.

I would rather see a Modi with his charisma and enthusiasm leading the IPL rather than a Shashank Manohar with his spotless white, typical political face.

What happened with Shashi Tharoor was very unfortunate. I still feel that the UPA government rushed through the entire "resignation" drama.

Looking forward to the FIFA World Cup. Want Brazil to win it again.

Cheers. Still unable to believe that I'm through with PUC. I have loads of stray papers, question papers, solution sheets, books etc etc etc. There is still that sentimental value attached to them (though many have never been opened more than once). Those books did help give my room the appearance of an IIT-Desirous. Will certainly miss them.
Have loads to clean and novels to catch up on.... FREE AT LAST!!!

Ciao

  2. I think Shashi's removal is absolutely justified. He didnt know the art of having benami shares and accounts...it was too public...there are loads of guys in the parliament who can be charged with impropriety. Lalu was untouched(700cr fodder scam), Sharad Pawar(Samrat of sugar and cricket), mayawati and Mulayum...and many more... Shashi became a scapegoat. Once a British PM wrote 3 chits and gave to his successor...he asked to open them whenever his Govt. was in crisis. When the 1st crisis came the successor opened the 1st chit which said"Blame on the previous Govt." When the second crisis came, the 2nd chit said"Sack a cabinet Minister." When the 3rd crisis came the 3rd chit said"Prepare 3 chits" Similarly Manmohan Singh has used the 1st principle for 6 years, he has used the 2nd recently, very shortly he too will have to prepare 3 chits as all his allies are ridden with criminal cases and financial impropriety who will surely bring this Govt and make way for Rahul baba.

  3. There is no Indian Government which has been corruption-free...and all this..why? It is because of Coalition Politics...

And personally, I think Shashi Tharoor is innocent...first, look at his record as a UN Diplomat..he was almost the Secretary General for Pete's sake! And why should anyone being Sunanda Pushkar into the picture? As she correctly described it, she's been the victim of a medieval witch hunt...

Speaking of corruption, right in our own backyard, we have the dubious NICE deals...and what about The Bellary Mining Scam?

B.S Yedduyrappa can not blame this scam on the Kumaraswamy government...

So, he sacked a Cabinet Minister...and brought more corrupt ones into the Cabinet!

Three chits won't help him here!

  4. All this axe effect tax effect is mainly due to the overenthusiastic media in India...
Switch on BBC World News or CNN World once, and there you'll never see such things..

  5. Its great so see comments after a long time!!

Yeah.. I'm with Swaroop on this one. Shashi Tharoor was unfortunate. The only thing he probably did was calling Modi and asking him not to reveal the names of the stakeholders. And I didnt get the lozic behind "sweat equity". What's the point if a company buys shares n then gives it off free?

  6. Indian politics is probably too twisted for Shashi Tharoor...Imagine if Pranab Mukherjee said to Manmohan Singh "This is a f***in deal!" or something like that...we'd have JPC and CBI enquiry demands!

Tweeting is something fresh in India, especially Indian politics...ppl need to know to handle it..

  7. Coming to the point, yes, IPL isn't all about cricket...i'd say it is 40% glam and 60% cricket...thankfully, it is still 60% cricket...

Whether it is Shashank Manohar or Lalit Modi, this 60-40 formula has to remain...or else IPL won't be able to sustain itself...

Because if all people wanted was cricket, they'd go watch test cricket!...people want glamour...they want SRK, they want Yuvraj-Preity tales...they want Deepika and whatshisname Mallya to be seen together...

But India also demands transparency...we don't want our money to finance Modi's private taxi-jet..

At the end of the day, IT-dept and ED have to probe into this, and punish whomsoever is guilty, whatsoever be the fate of IPL

  8. @ swaroop and shreyas... hmm...when shashi himself has demanded an investigation....why is the Govt. not setting an enquiry panel??? There should be a JPC.. CBI has become Congress bureau of investigation... no use if they handle the investigation... foes turn friends because of CBI... ITS A SHAME that an independent institution is being used by the Govt. for its survival...

Coming to Sunanda Pushkar... shes atthe centre of the controversy... she might be a proxy for Shashi... and coming to sweat equity... it is shares handed over to individuals who are stakeholders in the company as a salary... its cap is Rs.5 crore.. she was awarded Rs.75 crore.. and i would like to tell you about a similar incident in 1993...Mr. P Chidambaram the then commerce minister's wife had bought 100000 shares in a company( I dont remember its name) at face value... its market value was nearly 100 times the FV... PC resigned immediately as his companion had bought it... this was the rich tradition which they themselves set and didnt follow....

We cannot prejudge anyone unless he is proved guilty.... lets atleast hope that the Govt. sets a JPC.. Its a shame if they do not set...

  9. I feel that the Governing Council of IPL should also have been suspended...

MAK Pataudi says that he was dazzled by the success of IPL and hence didnt know about all the dealings which Lalit made... Its perhaps the most irresponsible statement made by him.. its totally stupid... they should have been thrown out first... the members were just dummies mwho met once a year... heard lalits words without giving a serious thought and now look where they are... in a big mess..

BTW what was the CEO of IPL doing??? he was also a dummy.... All are cheats... fraudsters... public cannot judge who is right and who is wrong...

  10. @shreyas... Sunanda hasnt invested a single paise in the Kochi team... hence handing over sweat equity is illegal...

@swaroop... completely agree with you... glam quotient also is a part of this brand...

  11. There have been many instances of CBI being misused..no doubts about that...but before setting up any probe, IT and ED should look into the magnitude of the scandal and then only should the government act...

It has become a fashion for the opposition in all state and central governments to demand a high level probe for each and every small incident..i'm not saying that this is not a big issue, but the depth of this has to be assessed first...

  12. I completely agree with you... But the ED and IT report to the Finance Minister... So they are under the clutches of the ruling party...

A JPC has the rights of calling any agency and any individual for questioning... Even the PM may be called for clarification...
